Pallbearers have a very special service that they preform in a funeral service. It is an honor to be asked by the grieving family to take on this role and very few people decline. However, if you have never been one before, you may ne nervous about your role and responsibilities. Directors of funeral homes in Boonville, CA. share what you need to know about being a pallbearer.
A pallbearer is a person who helps carry the casket in the funeral and/or burial. There are typically six to eight pallbearers depending on the size of the casket. If someone cannot actually carry the casket due to the individual being too weak or other issues, they can still stand in and walk alongside the casket as an honorary pallbearer.
The job of the pallbearer begins at the funeral home to collect the casket and place it in the hearse. The hearse will then take the casket to the funeral location and the pallbearers will ride in a special vehicle typically directly behind the hearse so that they can arrive the same time the hearse does.
Once at the location the pallbearers will assist with taking the casket out of the hearse. They will then carry the casket into the church or other location and place it in the front of the room in a procession.
When selecting pallbearers for your loved one’s funeral, think about who their closest friends were. These are normally the people you would ask first. Also make sure that the individuals you ask will be able to lift the casket. If not, they can still be an honorary pallbearer, but you will need to ask another person to make up their space.
Also make sure the individuals you ask are emotionally mature enough to handle the responsibility. Normally pallbearers are over the age of at least 16 years old. Not only is the role physically demanding, but emotionally as well.
Pallbearers should choose an outfit that is nice and formal and is appropriate for the occasion. For men this mean a nice suit in a somber color. For women, dresses or a pant suit would be appropriate. Both men and women pallbearers want to make sure and wear comfortable shoes and this job can be tough and you want to ensure safety.
If you have been asked to be a pallbearer for a funeral, know that this is a big honor. While you may ne nervous or hesitant to accept the request, try and do everything you can to be able to say yes. This is a big decision that the grieving family most likely did not take likely. They picked you for a reason that is important to them and out of respect for the deceased, it is nice if you can honor the request.
